Earth’s History Part 1 Bedrock Day 5
2
Do Now What are the 4 characteristics of a good index fossil?
3
4 Characteristics 1. Only lived for a short period of time 2. Found all over the world 3. Easy to identify 4. Lotss of them
4
Aim, Learning Target & Agenda AIM How do we visualize earth’s history in timeline form? Learning Target I can explain the geologic timescale and determine when important events happened in Earth’s History Agenda DO Now Earth’s History Go over HW (if we have time)
5
Timeline 1. In your group of 4 people (which you will chose), you will have a series of tasks. 2. Your group will receive a task sheet. 3. You will have to follow the directions and get my to sign off when you complete a task.
6
Task 1 – Fossil Category 1. Figure out how long your piece of paper will be. Our scale is 1 million years = 1 cm. Thus, if your fossil lived for 50 million years, you would cut a length 50 cm long. Make sure you use the CM side of your meter stick. Ex: the Martin fossil family live from 252 mya – 112 mya. The difference in time = 140 years. Thus, the length I will cut is 140 cm long. 2. Cut a length of the receipt paper at the appropriate length. 3. Next, write the name of the fossil family in large letters with a MARKER. 4. Next, shade your fossil family a color from the crayon box. 5. post your fossil group in the correct area along the big timeline.
7
Fossil Category We will have to take turns on this one because I only have one roll of tape. I will call you up to do this.
8
Fossil Letter Category Find the name of the fossil on your ESRT. Write the name on an index card / paper strip Find your fossil picture from the area of the room with your fossil picture Post the fossil picture on The correct fossil group (it will already be posted) The correct time period.
9
Life on Earth On a PINK colored paper, write you’re your “Life on Earth” fact with nice, neat handwriting. Post this event ABOVE the appropriate part of the timeline. If the timing is tight, you may have to make an arrow out of another piece of paper.
10
Important Geologic Event . On an ORANGE colored paper, write you’re your “ Important Geologic Event ” fact with nice, neat handwriting. Post this event ABOVE the appropriate part of the timeline. If the timing is tight, you may have to make an arrow out of another piece of paper.
11
Clean your section If crayons, papers left out, I will deduct points from your activity today… don’t try me!
