Acupuncture Treatment of Diseases Dermatology 1: Urticaria 风疹

Definition: Characterized by intense itching and an eruption of patchy wheals. Tendency of disappear and reappear, especially after exposure to wind, hence wind wheal. Main manifestations: Eruptions of light-red or pale pruritic pimples on the skin with transitory disappearance. Commonly refers to acute or chronic urticaria in western medicine.

Causes and Pathogenesis : Mainly caused by: 1.Due to weak constitution of the body… External wind gathers and attacks the skin surface Overeating of meat and fish leading to: accumulation of heat in the stomach and intestines, 2.And when further exposed or attack by external wind: The accumulated heat cannot be removed from interior or expelled from the exterior but is left in the skin leading to Rash.

Clinical Manifestations: Chief symptoms: i.Quick onset. ii.Sudden appearance of variable, irregular-shaped, patchy raised wheals on the skin surface. iii.Clear boundaries. iv.Colour: red or white v.Intense itch. vi.Can disappear fast. vii.Acute cases may last for 2 weeks. viii.Chronic cases will have repeat attacks.

Clinical Manifestations: 1.Invasion of external wind type Stated manifestations with: i.rashes are more severe on head, face and limbs. ii.onset related to changed of weather. iii.commonly a/w signs of exterior symptoms.

Clinical Manifestations: 2.Heat accumulation type Stated manifestations with: i.distension and pain in the epigastric region. ii.always diet related. iii.constipation or diarrhea. iv.concentrated urine. v.nausea and vomiting. vi.red tongue with yellow greasy coating. vii.slippery rapid pulse.

Clinical Manifestations: 3.Blood deficiency type Stated manifestations with: i.Problem can last for years. ii.a/w vexation. iii.Thirst. iv.red tongue. v.scant coating. vi.thick weak pulse.

Treatment : General principle Disperse wind. Clear heat. Activate blood and harmonizing the nutrients and immune system. Principle Channels: 1.Large Intestine channel. 2.Spleen channel. 3.Bladder channel.

Principle acupoints and explanation : 1.LI 11 Quchi 曲池 : disperse wing and release heat of Yangming. 2.LI 4 Hegu 合谷 : as above. 3.SP 10 Xuehai 血海 : regulate and activate blood. 4.SP 9 Sanyinjiao 三阴交 : as above. 5.BL 17 Geshu 膈腧 :Influential point of blood.

Principle of treatment 1. Invasion of external wind type Disperse wind. Clear heat. Activate blood and harmonizing the nutrients and immune system. Principle acupoints: as stated Supplementary acupoints: i.GV 14 Dazhui 大椎 : disperse wind and release heat of Yangming channel. ii.LU 10 Yuji 鱼际 : disperse wind and release heat of the Taiyin channel.
