Don’t Forget the Instructional Design Applying Instructional Design Principles in Moodle

Introduction Who am I? What are we going to talk about? Why is this important?

Who said this, and what was he/she talking about? It is possible to teach every branch of human knowledge with the [new technology]. Our school system will be completely changed inside of ten years.

There's a real risk, though, that the thoughtless practices will dominate, slowly dumbing down huge numbers of tomorrow's adults. ~1997

Who is Robert Gagné? American Experimental Psychologist Military Trainer Learning Theorist Best Known for –5 Types of Learning –8 Conditions of Learning –9 Events of Instruction We will focus on the 9 events of instruction

Nine Events of Instruction Gaining Attention Informing the Learner of the Objective Stimulating Recall of Prior Knowledge Presenting Information Providing Guidance Eliciting Performance Providing Feedback Assessing Performance Enhancing Retention & Transfer Image from UNT Health Science Center http://www.hsc.unt.edu/departments/cld/CourseDesign- TeachingStrategies.cfmhttp://www.hsc.unt.edu/departments/cld/CourseDesign- TeachingStrategies.cfm

Gaining Attention Seldom done well in moodle courses It is important to grab their attention and get them thinking Splash image, video, etc. is excellent for this. New Jersey Institute of Technology has an excellent video on how to do this: https://youtu.be/aUXpGH6 -yHk

Informing the Learner of the Objective Have an agenda for all lessons Be clear in expectations This does not mean state learning objectives used in instructional design

Stimulating Recall of Prior Knowledge Include discussion forums for students to share their experiences with a subject Use Moodle’s quiz feature to create pretests Get creative

Presenting Information, Providing Guidance, Eliciting Performance, and Giving Feedback Don’t just present information, get students to engage in the content Use SCORM compliant multimedia authoring tools such as Captivate, Articulate Presenter, and Storyline Create simulations Create Scenarios Be Creative! Example

Assessing Performance and Enhancing Retention & Transfer Don’t just use multiple choice tests Create assignments that allow the student to apply what they’ve learned Assessments can be created using the previously mentioned multimedia development tools Think outside the box!

Don’t Tax Their Cognitive Load: The User Experience Don’t overwhelm the students with too much information Make things simple to navigate Avoid long scrolling pages

Wrapping It All Up Think outside the box Keep the student in mind Don’t let the content design your course Questions?
