5 Mystery Figures: 1. Broken into several parts, it is possible to walk inside this vast, landscape sculpture 2. Carved from wood, the knotholes and wood grain determine the shape of this figure. The spaces are as important as the shapes 3. A perfect example of Moore ’ s enclosed space, the negative spaces in this work have become as important as the positive spaces 4. The stylized but realistic work was influenced by Greek and Roman art 5. The segmented head of this tall, angular and linear standing figure resembles that of an insect

7 Modeling a Figure: Sculpt a clay figure that incorporates Henry Moore ’ s unique concept of “ enclosed space ” by “ opening up ” spaces around the shapes. Begin by creating a biomorphic abstraction of the monumental figures: WARRIOR MADDONNA ODALISQUE drawn in the earlier class (biomorphism is a description of an unknown organic species that follows its own laws of growth) Consider how to stylize or simplify the curvilinear shape of the figure into basic organic forms, weighted in some areas by gravity and opening interior spaces in other areas by attaching the appendages to the torso
