Goals What are goals? Why is it important to set goals? How are long-term and short-term goals related?

What are goals? “The end toward which effort is directed.” Merriam- Webster dictionary A vision for what you want to achieve: Something you want to learn A way you want to think or feel A way you want to look Something you want to do

Why is it important to set goals? Help you decide the steps to take First, decide what you want in the end Vision Long-term goal Next, decide how to get there Plan Short-term goals

How are long-term and short-term goals related? Picture yourself connected to your long term goal by a chain. The links in the chain are the short-term goals. Short-term goals help provide the motivation to stick to the plan (long-term goal).

SMART Goals Specific—do you know who, what, where, when, and how? Measurable—how will you know when you’ve reached your goal? Attainable—is this a goal you want to reach? Realistic—is it possible for you to reach this goal? Timely—can you reach this goal in a limited amount of time?

Tips for getting motivated Remember your reasons why Imagine success Talk with your mentor or supporters Watch, read or look at something motivating Believe in yourself!!!

Rewards Extrinsic External Praise, money, prizes Intrinsic Internal Satisfaction, accomplishment, pride

Parents: Rewards are important! Helps with those first steps in motivation Stipulations: Nothing food or food-related Must be something the child will be excited to get that the parent is willing to give Must be decided on before working on goals Must be contingent on the goals only, which means the child should get the prize if he/she meets his/her goals, NO MATTER WHAT!
