1 DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Plants Plants and Their Parts > Leaves

2 Leaves – The Big Ideas Leaf cells have chlorophyll. Photosynthesis takes place in leaf cells. During photosynthesis, light energy, trapped by chlorophyll, is used to transform carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen. Veins in leaves allow water and nutrients to travel around the plant.

3 Leaves – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of plants prior to this study. It will help for students to use the Fun-damental, Getting to Know Plants. It will also help if they have:Getting to Know Plants Seen different kinds of plants and flowers. Planted a seed. Learned that plants have parts that serve different purposes.

4 Leaves – Common Misconceptions Leaves falling from trees indicates the trees are dead. When leaves appear, the trees are alive again in the spring. Reality: Trees are dormant in the winter and live off of food they have stored. Life processes continue, but at a very slow rate. In the spring, buds bring about new leaves.
