3  The goal of the career credit is to: › Get you closer to your plan for after high school each year › Make sure your education is preparing you for your option and › Create a plan to pay for this option .5 Career Credit consists of: › Naviance Activities (9 th, 10 th and 11 th Grade) › Resume › Job Shadow › Senior Meeting

5  Language Arts: › 4.0 credits  Math: › 3.0 credits  Science: › 3.0 credits  Social Studies: › 3.0 credits  PE: › 1.0 credit  Health: › 1.0 credit  Electives: › 8.0 credits  Career Development: ›.5 credit  Senior Project: ›.5 credit  Pass Essential Skills for Reading, Writing and Math › State Tests or Work Samples

6  Requirements above Standard Diploma: › 26 total credits (not 24) › 2 years of World Language › Through Algebra 2 for Math › 16 academic credits › C or higher in all academic classes › Cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher Prepares you for 2- and 4-Year college Requirements

8  Requirements above Standard Diploma: › At least 8 eligible courses (all AP courses, most Honors/Advanced/Accelerated, etc.) › Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher › 3 years of the same World Language › 26 total credits (not 24) › Enrolled in minimum of 6 classes each year  Worksheet in the counseling center Highest diploma option

Private: › Pacific University, Lewis & Clark College, Linfield College, University of Portland, Reed College, University of Puget Sound  College Visits at Glencoe

13  Admissions Requirements › ACT/SAT :  College admissions tests  Most schools accept a score from either test › GPA: most schools require 3.0 or above (average of Bs)  Will not accept Ds in any core classes! › Essay/Personal Statement  Explain any special circumstances › Transcript  Courses of Rigor: more advanced classes  World Languages  Cannot be a Modified Diploma Hybrid Test: FREE! 15  Diploma or GED is required › Modified or Standard is OK › Undocumented students are welcome  No GPA requirement  No World Language requirement  Placement Tests (like a Pre-test) › Reading, Writing, Math › Some programs have requirements › Doing well in GHS classes can help your future › Can use SAT or ACT scores as well

16  No out-of-state tuition  Some have Dorms › COCC – partners w/ OSU Cascades (Bend) so you live on a University Campus!  Playing sports can be an option

17  Transfer Degree vs. Associates Degree › Transfer: To help you prep for 4-year university. Generally just your basic core classes › Associates: Particular set of classes for a degree after 2 years. Includes basic core as well  Some 3 - 12-month programs offered › Examples: HVAC Program, Corrections Technicians, 911 Dispatcher, Bookkeeper, Pharmacy Technician, Food Service  Common Community College Programs: › Auto Tech, Mechanics, Nursing, Dental Assisting, Business/Accounting, Fire Science Different possible pathways…

18  What are 2 similarities and 2 differences between a 2-year and 4-year college?  Which are you currently on track for?

19  4-Year University › GPA Requirement (usually at least 3.0) › 2 Years of a World Language › Ds in Core Classes not Accepted › Must Take ACT or SAT  2-Year College › No GPA requirement (use as a fresh start) › No World Language Required › Need Diploma (any type) or GED › Must take Placement Tests (Reading, Writing, Math)

20  Shorter Programs  Specific job training and career skills › Often on-the-job training or school in addition to work › Apprenticeship › Job Corps  Common Programs: › Massage, Cosmetology › Pipe Fitting, Carpentry, Plumber, › Power Lineman, Electrician › Culinary › Diesel Mechanic, Auto Detailing/Painting

21  5 Branches: › Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy  Must have Standard Diploma or higher › Modified Diploma and GED are not accepted  All branches visit GHS each month  Take ASVAB Test › FREE at Glencoe on Thursday, Jan 29

22  Walking in: Join right out of high school › Serve in military, then go to college › Career tech training is provided while serving  ROTC : Go to college right out of HS, while in military › Serve in military after college at an officer ranking › Must apply to college then apply for ROTC through branch of service of choice › Not every college has every branch › Free to go to college, like a scholarship  Military Academy : Most difficult option (top 5%) › Go to military college, leave as officer ranking, then serve › Very long, intense process - starts junior year › Free to go to college

23  Finding work can be hard!  Work Skills needed to make you hireable: › Timeliness, regular attendance › Able to learn new tasks and perform well › Work well with other people and bosses › Be eager to learn › Willing to accept responsibility  Use of your transcript and/or references
