Elimination Sometimes it’s not practical to use substitution to solve a system of equations (recall practice d from Lesson 59) Sometimes it’s easier to eliminate one of the variables by combining the two equations using addition or subtraction.

A movie theater sells 540 tickets to a matinee showing of a new animated feature. A child matinee ticket costs $5.50 and an adult matinee ticket costs $6.00. If the movie theater made $3060 for that showing, how many adult tickets were sold?
