Background Foxconn Technology Group was a high-tech enterprise founded in 1974, which is specialized in computer, communications, consumer electronics, digital content, auto parts, access and so on. From January 23, 2010 to November 5, 2010, 14 incidents occurred in Foxconn, causing the community and the world's attention.

Causes

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Need 1. Physiological needs Before salary increase in June, 2 nd, 2010, General staff’s salary is 900 yuan per month and workers at the production line’s basic pay is 1200, which is too low to satisfy workers’ food, water, shelter, clothing and other physiological needs well.

Security needs working more than Foxconn's mandated maximum hours (10 or 11 hours a day) during peak production times many workers were getting insufficient days off exhausted after countless repetitions of the same movements on the production lines Verbal abuse rains down on them if they make a mistake and some have even been beaten up by security guards.

3. Social needs Workers from the same workshop are distributed around different rooms. Workers have no say in where they live. When troubles hit them, these workers, away from their families and other support networks, have neither family nor friends to turn to.

4. Esteem needs Indifference between people No acknowledge of their ability No reward for excellent work Little promotion to a higher position Little status, recognition, self-respect Lack of sense of belonging and cohesion

The Hawthorne Studies On June 2 nd, 2010, Foxconn announced a 30% rise of ordinary workers’ salary, from 900 yuan to 1,200 yuan. but they have to work overtime and have little time to do their own things

Herzberg’s Two-factor Theory lack of hygienic factors such as money, security, working condition( low wage, long working hours, dangerous working environment with hazardous materials, heat, cold and radiation no motivation factors such as responsibility, recognition, promotion for workers in Foxcoon

Suggestions 1. Enhanced security prevention provide more security guidance training, and sent more security guards to support the business management 2. Enhance psychological counseling sent psychologists to strengthen psychological counseling for employees hold cultural and sports activities to ease the young staff stress and tension.

3. Strengthen labor inspection labor security department should inspect labor contracts, wages, overtime, labor intensity, etc. enable labors to choose whether to work overtime measure scale and labor intensity and improve the construction

4. Strengthen education of employees’ dignity regulate security and management system, improve security measures and management of workers all security guards and grassroots cadres should not manhandled staff

5. Increase the construction of public facilities plan and construct a number of necessary cultural facilities improving public facilities, increase public services to satisfy the staff 6. Build a "love circle” allow workers to live with everybody as they like, which strengthen communication between roommates

7. Strengthen grass-roots organizations enable workers in every workshops and every accommodation unit to reflect their opinions timely 8. Construction Safety Network install dense stainless steel network and fence around workers’ dormitory balcony
