Efficient gas uses in the residential sector Marc Florette – Member of the Executive Committee June 24 th 2011
2
2 WHAT GAS TECHNOLOGIES HAVE ALREADY ACHIEVED 1 kWh natural gas 1.00 kWh heat Condensing boiler 1 kWh natural gas 0.75 kWh heat Standard boiler 1990 1980 increase by 30% High efficiency boiler 2000 Source : Eurogas and GERG
3
3 TECHNOLOGIES ROADMAP Well-known and used technology European codes and standards Primary energy reduction / standard boiler 199020002010 2020 Boiler Absoprtion gas heat pump (domestic) Gas heat pump (commercial) Micro-CHP with fuel cell + renewable energy solutions (thermal solar, PV,…) Low temperature boiler Electric appliances Condensing boiler Micro-CHP (stirling) Hybrid heat pump Electric heat pump
4
4 GAS HEAT PUMP : TWO TECHNOLOGIES TO COVER THE RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL SECTORS Available on the market for commercial buildings and collective dwelling In last development stage for individual housing Gas engine driven heat pump Absorption heat pumps high efficiency : 150% for heating and 140% for cooling very high energy efficiency in heating : about 165 % for the aero thermal HP and 170% for the geothermal HP
5
5 MICRO-CHP : TO PRODUCE SIMULTANEOUSLY HEAT AND ELECTRICITY Two technologies : stirling engine already available covers 100% of the heating needs and hot water, and 50 to 70% of the electricity needs fuel cells expected from 2015 Total production efficiency (heat & electricity) = 105% A new way to monitor electricity demand via virtual power station Smart electricity and gas networks convergence
6
DECREASE THE PEAK Electrical Heating Electrical Heat Pump Micro CHP Flexible Micro CHP * INCREASE THE PEAK NATURAL GAS DEVELOPMENT Fuel Cell Flexible Fuel Cell * Natural gas can contribute to smart grids The French example * Smart grids solutions Flexible Hybrid Heat Pump * Condensing boiler Hybrid Heat Pump
7
7 GAS TECHNOLOGIES WILL MEET EU ENERGY OBJECTIVES Source : Eurogas and GERG 1 kWh natural gas 1.00 kWh heat Gas heat pump Condensing boiler 1 kWh natural gas 0.75 kWh heat Standard boiler 2000 1980 2010 1 kWh natural gas 1.30 kWh heat increase by 70% 20301 kWh natural gas 1.50 kWh heat
