1 Different Kinds of Microscopes
Compound Microscopes Different Kinds of Microscopes

2 12-10-13 Intro to Microscopes
Title a NEW page: Unit 4 Cells & Microscopes On the NEXT page begin with the lesson: Intro to Microscopes Key Question: What is the correct way to use a microscope? Initial thoughts:

3 Evidence #1: Notes & W.S. After writing the above title, paste the two handouts into your notebook.

4 What is the difference between a simple and a compound microscope?
Simple: one lens (magnifying glass) Compound: 2 or more lenses Simple vs. Compound VideoClip

5 To calculate the magnifying power of a compound microscope:
Multiply the lens powers together! Parts of the Microscope

6

7 Disc Diaphragm Controls: amount of light
Located: Underneath stage (dial)

8 The eyepiece has a magnifying power of 10X by itself
Low power: 4X; Red color band; and has a TOTAL magnification of 40 X. Low power is mainly used for: large objects/scanning

9 Medium power: 10 X; yellow color and has a TOTAL magnification of 100 X
High power 40X; blue color and has a TOTAL magnification of 400 X High power is mainly for: small objects/details

10 Steps to get started 1. Make sure it is on LOW power!
2. The stage should be all the way UP (close to the objective lens) You focus by slowly moving the stage DOWN 3. Check the light setting (should be at 1) How to Use the Microscope Clip

11 Carrying the Microscope
2 Hands!

12 Some Definite Nevers NEVER use the coarse focus knob while on medium or high power. NEVER touch the lens or the light. NEVER change the objective/lens while looking through the eyepiece.

13 Putting away the Microscope
1) It should be on low power. 2) The cord is wrapped around base. 3) The stage is all the way down (do this with the coarse focus knob) 4) The light switch should be off.

14 What if you can’t get your object into focus?
Check to see if the lenses are clicked into place Check that your disc diaphragm is in place (not on the lowest or highest settings) Clean your lenses using ONLY LENS PAPER. Go back to low power & start over!

15 Other kinds of microscopes:
Electron images

16 12/11/13 Evidence #2: Virtual Microscope Lab Observations:
Paste the observations page and the drawing tips into your notebook.

18 Today’s Goal To learn the parts of a microscope and how to use and focus a microscope using a virtual simulation. Log on to your computer and go to swift documents  “Virtual Microscope Lab” Go to the website on instructions:

19 Drawings Refer to the “Microscope Drawing Made Easy”

20 Analysis Questions How do you calculate the total magnification of the microscope? A) Describe how the microscope CHANGES the position of the letter “e”. B) In what direction does the slide appear to move (through the microscope) when you move it to the left? Compare the drawing of the onion root tip and the cheek smear. How are the cells different?

21 Summary Make sure this is thoughtful and thorough.
In a well developed paragraph: What did you think before about the correct way to use a microscope? (look back at your initial thoughts) What did you learn the correct way to use a microscope? Be specific! (look back at your evidence section). What evidence do you have that you learned this? Further Thoughts Make sure this is thoughtful and thorough.

22 Reflection Create a warning label to make sure the microscope does not get damaged.

23 Big Idea

24 Unit 4 – Microscopes & Cells
Do Now Pick up the green slip and the pre-test on the back table. QUIETLY Start your Pre-test; when done turn in to the inbox In your journal, on the next full page write: Unit 4 – Microscopes & Cells Paste the green learning targets below

25 Class Time Log on to SWIFT and find the Vocabulary assignment.
Work on getting the vocabulary done. The book definitions are DUE FRIDAY. Use the green Life Science Books & Glossary
