Sustainability Environmental sustainability – Affected by the pace of human development We must adopt sustainable living practices Mankind cannot take advantage of the world Every citizen needs to be aware of their impact – Natural resources – Fossil fuels – Sanitation

Climate concerns Ongoing deforestation of the Amazon rainforest – Clearly secondary to advances by people – Causes Human settlement Development of the land

Law 840 2008 saw a law that allowed sale of jungle to private firms – Put indigenous people at risk – Thought to encourage deforestation – Ultimately repealed as being unconstitutional

Other governmental issues Many landowners see advantages of selling off their lands – Used for livestock pastures – Improved revenue – Involvement in government programs Highways Export of soybeans

Sustainability and stewardship The consequences of the Amazon show increased need for sustainability and stewardship – Sustainability We need to protect our natural resources Limit the destruction of the rainforest – Stewardship It is our duty to protect the world The rainforest belongs to everyone, not just some

Conclusion Sustainability is our commitment to the earth Natural elements such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous are connected to the earth through living and abiotic cycles Climate disasters are linked to the maintenance of sustainability as well as our continued stewardship of the earth
