Enter the classroom quietly, pick up the daily handouts, and join in the classroom activities with minimal disruption. If your tardies continue, there will be consequences. (i.e.: talk with me, parent contact, administration involvement) If you are tardy more than 20 minutes late to class (unexcused), it will be counted as an unexcused absence. TARDY PROCEDURE
11
When you are absent, check online for notes and assignments. Also, check with classmates to find out what you missed. As a last resort, ask the teacher during quiet work time If you are missing work from the absence, the missing assignments will be in the organizer on the back table. As a last resort, ask the teacher. ABSENCE PROCEDURE

When we are having class discussions, raise your hand to be called on and actively listen to whoever is speaking. Teacher will give specific instructions when students are to call out answers without first raising their hands. Ask only questions that are relevant to the lesson. Be respectful of all comments and ideas, even if they differ from yours. LISTENING TO/ RESPONDING TO QUESTIONS
13
Listen attentively to other’s writing. No cell phones or other electronic devices are allowed during the sharing session. Do not make comments on other’s writing unless asked. Be supportive and honest in your comments. No personal put-downs. Constructive criticism is allowed. Be specific with your comments. “I like it.” is not specific. “The part in your story where Mila broke up with Charles was very effective because I could hear the honesty in their dialogue.” is specific. Writer’s Notebook- Keep a “Writer’s Notebook" with the goal of writing in it at least every other day. Evidence of amount and quality will be presented to Mrs. C for credit when called for. Random checks of practice book entries will be taken, so bring your book to class daily. The Writer’s Notebook will have two components: 1. Daily entries – daily writings on things that you notice, think about, etc. 2. Collections – quotations, pictures, words, lyrics, writing ideas, anything that has the potential of feeding into a piece of writing at some point Polished Pieces - Revise and polish certain pieces per term from class and your Writer’s Notebook and submit to teacher for evaluation of process and product. ASSIGNMENTS
18
Attendance - over five absences will result in a failing grade. When you are not here, you cannot contribute or learn from others. Attendance is VITAL. Participation - 15 points will be given per day 5 points = ON TIME, ready to go. Tardiness results in a zero out of five in this section. 5 points = writer self: you are writing when asked, working on the given assignments 5 points = audience self: listening, reading, responding, showing respect. Participation points ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE. When you are absent from class, you cannot gain the experience of having heard the work of others. You may make up participation points for only two cleared absences per term Writing assignments and evidence of improvement and revision GRADES WILL BE DETERMINED BY
19
Grade Breakdown: 75% Assignments (all writing in class, practice book, etc.) 25% Participation Lack of Credit: Any assignment turned in that is inappropriate, degrading, offensive, explicitly violent/sexual in nature, and any writing in violation of the Safe Schools Policy will be given an automatic ZERO.
