1 The suffering of the King – Mk.14/15 We have seen in Mark:- 1.Jesus is God’s anointed Saviour & King Mk.1-8 2.Jesus is welcomed as that King –11:1-11 3.Jesus shows his authority as King:- a. Cleansing the temple -11:12-21 b. Challenging the leaders -11:27-12:40 4. Jesus looks forward to the display of his glory as King – 13:26,27 The events of Chs.14 & 15 come as a shock

2 1. The horrific suffering of King Jesus a.Anticipating the suffering:- 1. The plots of enemies & friend- 14:1,2,10,11,18,21 2. Anticipates his death & burial - 14:8,23,24 3. Desertion by his friends -14:27-31 4. The horror of what is coming-14:32-36

Betrayed, arrested, tried & executed – 14:43-15:27 1.Betrayed, arrested, deserted-14:43-51 2.Shameful trial – 14:53-65 3.Peter denies knowing him-14:66-72 4.Condemned to death, abused & brutally beaten – 15:1-32 5.Unbearable spiritual anguish-15:33,34 6.Dies and is buried – 15:37-47 Is he a helpless victim?

4 2. The glorious victory of the Cross 15:38 encapsulates the great achievement:- a.A great deliverance -14:9,12-26 b.The means of deliverance:- 1. Jesus takes our sins – Is.53:6; 1Pet.2:24 2. Jesus bears our judgment & hell-15:33,34 - the darkness of hell, separation from God - the wrath of God against evil – Ps.75:7,8: Is.53:4,5,10a; Gal.3:13

5 The glorious victory of the Cross c. The amazing deliverance:- 1. People restored to God – 15:38 N.T. images- Justification, Propitiation, Reconciliation, Redemption etc. Rom.3:21-26; 8:1-4,28-39; Gal.3:6-14; 2Cor.5:17-21; Eph.2:1-10; 1Pet.2:24,25 2. Jesus exalted – 14:62; Phil.2:8-11

6 3. How should we respond? a.With shame because of our sin b.With wonder at the cost to God c.With eagerness to embrace this wonderful salvation d.With joy as we explore this great salvation e.With extravagant love & devotion -14:3-9
