BELL WORK: TUESDAY 9/07/10 (WRITE Q&A) (get new paper by door) On Page 14: 1. Convert the following: 1. 100 m to Km 2. 100 cm to m 3. 100 mm to m
2
Academic Standards: Core Standard 1 Nature of Science Page 61: Derived Units
3
Page 61: Cornell Notes Mass is The measure of the amount of matter in an object Measured in grams or kilograms Volume is The measure of the amount of space an object takes up Measured in liters, mililiters (= to cubic centimeters)
4
Page 61: Cornell Notes Density is The ratio of mass to volume of an object Formula density=mass/volume Solve for d D=m/v Solve for m M=d x v Solve for v V=m/d
5
Page 61: Cornell Notes If: density = 2.7 g/mL, volume = 3.0mL, what is the mass in grams? D=m/v M=vd M=3.0ml x 2.7 g/ml M=8.1 g

Page 60: Bookwork P29 Q&A 1,2,3
7
Homework instructions For handout: Show work on another sheet of paper Write answers on handout Correct metric conversions from quiz Must use Dimensional Analysis Must be done on a New Sheet of paper Staple it all together
8
BELL WORK: WEDNESDAY 9/08/10 (WRITE Q&A) On Page 15: 1. If the mass is 8.1 g, volume = 3.0mL, what is the density?
9
Academic Standards: Core Standard 1 Nature of Science Page 63: Dimensional Analysis
10
Page 63: Cornell Notes Dimensional Analysis A problem-solving method that uses the fact that any number or expression can be multiplied by one without changing its value
11
Page 63: Cornell Notes Example: You have 15 roses, how many dozens of roses do you have? First you have to know the conversion factor, what is the conversion factor for dozens of roses? 12 roses per one dozen or 12 roses/dozen Now take your known (15 roses) and apply: 15 roses x 1 dozen/12 roses = 1.25 dozen of roses
12
Page 63: Cornell Notes You can invert a conversion factor any time the problem requires it. How do you know when to invert a conversion factor? Make sure whatever unit you start with is on the bottom (denominator) of your conversion factor.
13
Page 63: Cornell Notes Pracitce: Convert 50mL to liters What is the conversion factor? 1 L/1000 mL Setup: 50mL x 1L/1000 mL = What happens to the mL? They cancel out Answer: 0.0500 L
14
Page 62: Practice Use dimensional analysis to solve the following. Show all of your work. 1. Convert 100 mg to grams. 2. Convert 24 liters to cL. 3. Convert 52 cm to meters
15
BELL WORK: THURSDAY 9/09/10 (WRITE Q&A) On Page 15: 1. Who’s got denser fur, a Sumatran tiger (20,000,000 hairs / m2) or a sea otter (650,000 hairs / in2)? (There are 2.54 cm per inch)
16
Dimensional Analysis Practice Page 64: Convert 4800 g to kg Conversion factor: 1000 g/1 kg Convert 5 m to cm Conversion factor: 1 m/100 cm Convert 24 hours to seconds 1 hour/60 minutes & 1 minute/ 60 seconds Convert 550 m/s to km/min 60s/min, 1km/1000m
17
Answer the following questions from p34 & 35 in your textbook (if you show all the steps you do not have to write the question) 17 c, d 18 a, c 20 21 Page 65

BELL WORK: FRIDAY 9/10/10 (WRITE Q&A) On Page 15: 1. Convert 3 days to seconds
19
Catch up day!! (this is all the classwork from this week) P60 1,2,3 from p29 in your textbook P62 1. Convert 100 mg to grams. 2. Convert 24 liters to cL. 3. Convert 52 cm to meters P65 17c, 17d, 18a, 18c, 20 & 21 from page 34 & 35 in your textbook
