1 IMPERSONAL PRONOUNS MEC 3 LESSON 136 FRANCISCO NAKAJIMA

2 Impersonal pronouns  We use IMPERSONAL PRONOUNS when we do not want to identify the subject. E.g.:   One should always tell the truth.   If you want to get rich, you have to work hard.   People should often eat vegetable. ___ ______ ___

3 ONE  When we use ONE, we refer back to it using:  ONE, ONE´S/ONESELF  HIS, HIM  HIS/HER, HIM/HER  HIMSELF/HERSELF We can also use: S/HE – HIS/HER – HIM/HER – HIMSELF/HERSELF We can also use: S/HE – HIS/HER – HIM/HER – HIMSELF/HERSELF  ONE should never give up ONE´S/ HIS/HER dreams.

4 PEOPLE  When we use PEOPLE, we refer back to it using:  PEOPLE´S  THEIR  THEM  THEMSELVES  PEOPLE should never give up PEOPLE´S/ THEIR dreams.

5 YOU  When we use YOU, we refer back to it using:  YOUR  YOURS  YOURSELF  YOU should never give up YOUR dreams.

6 WE  When we use WE, we refer back to it using:  OUR  OURS  OURSELVES  WE should never give up OUR dreams.

7 ATTENTION!  SINGULAR PRONOUNS require SINGULAR PRONOUNS and SINGULAR VERBS; therefore, PLURAL PRONOUNS require PLURAL PRONOUNS and PLURAL VERBS.  ONE always has what S/HE deserves.  PEOPLE always have what THEY deserve.  WE always have what WE deserve.

8 KEEP IN MIND If you must refer back to impersonal pronoun ONE many times, you should use HE/SHE – HER/HIM – HER/HIS, etc. Using ONE/ONE´S/ONESELF etc would not be wrong, but not NATURAL. If you must refer back to impersonal pronoun ONE many times, you should use HE/SHE – HER/HIM – HER/HIS, etc. Using ONE/ONE´S/ONESELF etc would not be wrong, but not NATURAL.  ONE must have ONE´S goal to keep ONESELF happy.  S/HE must have HIS/HER goal to keep HIMSELF/HERSELF happy. CORRECT BUT UNNATURAL
