1 STAIRCASE RESTRICTIONS
The area available can be restricted by the: position of walls dimensions of the available space location of access doorways to rooms height between floor levels. The area available can be restricted by the: position of walls dimensions of the available space location of access doorways to rooms height between floor levels.

2 DOGLEGGED STAIRS You can use a dog legged stair in areas which have:
a minimum length of floor space (total going) sufficient width for two stair flights. You would use a half space landing when installing a dog legged stair. Doorway restrictions Restricted width Some examples of how the area available for stairs can determine the design of those stairs are explained below. Dog legged stair

3 STRAIGHT FLIGHT Landings are sometimes needed in long flights of stairs Straight flight stair You can use a straight flight stair in areas with: a large length of floor space at ground floor level (going) minimum width for only one stair flight. You would not install a stair landing for these types of stairs. Straight flight stair You can use a straight flight stair in areas with: a large length of floor space at ground floor level (going) or minimum width for only one stair flight. You would install a landing when the No rises exceeds 18.

4 OPEN NEWEL STAIR WITH QUARTER SPACED LANDING
USE a minimum amount of floor space at both levels minimum width for both flights.

5 REGULATIONS COVERING DIMENSIONS OF STAIR DESIGN
The Building Code of Australia Australian Standard AS Fixed platforms etc. These provide the standard regulations for the dimensional requirements including: maximum and minimum rise and going of each step maximum space between tread surfaces on an open stair minimum handrail heights on stairflights and landings maximum gaps between balusters on balustrade minimum vertical clearance – headroom minimum clearance from stair landings to adjacent doors. You should make sure your specifications and drawings meet these minimums and maximums when you design stairs. These provide the standard regulations for the dimensional requirement you looked at in the last section, including: maximum and minimum rise and going of each step maximum space between tread surfaces on an open stair minimum handrail heights on stairflights and landings maximum gaps between balusters on balustrade minimum vertical clearance – headroom minimum clearance from stair landings to adjacent doors. You should make sure your specifications and drawings meet these minimums and maximums when you design stairs.
