Why a 1:1 model? a targeted initiative collaborative technologies key tool enhancing student learning improved student outcomes collective responsibility disciplined approach bridging the home / school divide Learning - anytime; anywhere; any device

CURRENT DEVICES 2015

The Devices Dell Convertible - Tablet; Tent; Presentation; Laptop This is really useful in class – in tablet mode the device functions much like that of a regular binder book or binder with loose leaf and there are less barriers between student peers and the teacher (no hiding behind the screen); in presentation mode students will be able to share their work with others much more easily and in laptop mode they will be able to complete the more significant typing tasks they are required to do. Large track pad Touch technology Processor – Celeron and i3 This is the difference between choice 1 and 2. The difference can be likened to the difference between a 4 cylinder car and a 6 cylinder. Each car will be able to climb that steep hill, but the 4 cylinder will do it a few seconds slower than the 6. The Celeron processor is appropriate and functional at school where students will not be required to have a number of windows open or completing a number of tasks. The performance difference is definitely just seconds. By the end of the school day after having experienced a range of work the Celeron will be slower than the i3. The difference though is dependent on the work done – what has been asked of the device as well as how well maintained the device is. Any machine will slow if it has a large number of films, games, music and games stored on it. Able to be serviced and repaired onsite

Surface Pro 3 If the Dell computers are considered to be the 4 and 6 cylinder then the Microsoft Surface Pro is an 8 cylinder. It has more power, therefore it can perform more functions more quickly (again time is seconds, not minutes). There are specific things you can do on the Surface that cannot be done on the Dell, for example the use of a stylus and writing on the screen (it can convert to handwriting to typed font, or you can just use it as a notebook and write notes; annotate PDFs and alike). But you would expect this device to be a little more given the price. You may have noted that the Hard drive is not as large as the Dell computers as it is just 128MB whilst the Dells are 500MB. The type of hard drives are different between the two brands which does account for the difference in part. Please know though that the Hard drive space is sufficient for what is required at school and the machine does hold a lot of data. Tablet and computer Kickstand Removable keyboard Stylus and writing / annotating functionality Processor – i5 Return to base warranty – Microsoft will need to be contacted and the process is dependent on the specific problem, in some cases with a warranty claim a solution can be as little as 3 days or longer if necessary. At school we have a bank of netbooks available for students to borrow if their own device is not working for some reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child just bring their netbook from home? We are often asked this question. The problem with these cheaper machines is that they do not have the minimum requirements to run on our system. At school we have an enterprise network as we are connecting a volume of devices as such different requirements are needed than when operating at home. When comparing these devices to the devices selected by the school look at the processor speed and the GHz specifically.

What software will be on the machines? Purpose built image Licenced software Microsoft Windows 8.1 Microsoft Enterprise Suite Adobe suite Inspiration 9 Many more Each of the leased devices comes with software appropriate to school work and specifically chosen for the tasks students would be expected to complete. The software is another aspect to take into account when trying to compare the machines at the stores with the lease devices as when purchasing a device you would need to also purchase the software. The software is only available to be put on school owned devices which a further reason why we choose the leasing option.

Why don’t we use ipads? ipads are good companion devices A computer, however, allows for more processing and creation of knowledge As society moves to a more touch-based system we have included this style of technology as part of the criteria for current devices. We have chosen those with tablet function but they are definitely doing the work of a computer.

A parting thought – the future of technology is unknown, and it is this unknown future for which we are preparing students. Perhaps it may look like this: https://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=jZkHpNnXLB0 https://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=jZkHpNnXLB0
