Traumatic Brain Injury Jessica Guiel & Rebecca Ferrer

A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can either be a severe or mild brain injury due to some sort of sudden trauma causing damage to the brain.

Activity Clay model Clay model Spaghetti Spaghetti

For the clay model of the brain… Use the different colors of clay that correspond to the colors in this image for the different areas of the brain.

How damage to the brain can occur: Damage can occur from a sudden, violent hit from an object of some sort, or when an object pierces the skull and enters the tissue of the brain.

Glasgow Coma Scale The Glasgow Coma Scale is used to measure the severity of the injury. The Glasgow Coma Scale is used to measure the severity of the injury. The Post Traumatic Amnesia Scale (table on the bottom) can sometimes be a better scale for measuring the severity by how much amnesia the person experiences. The Post Traumatic Amnesia Scale (table on the bottom) can sometimes be a better scale for measuring the severity by how much amnesia the person experiences. 7 What happens to your brain when you have a Traumatic Brain Injury?

Activity Jell-O activity – smashing/dropping the Jell-O brain…. Jell-O activity – smashing/dropping the Jell-O brain…. Make predictions; What would happen if it was a real brain inside a skull?

The brain is about 3 to 4 pounds of soft tissue that is extremely delicate. Nature views the brain as a very important organ, providing it with several protective layers. What happens to your Brain? Localized Injury a blood clot forms from the injury that your brain has obtained Diffuse Axonal Injury neurons get pulled, stretched, torn, etc. Secondary Brain Injury not getting enough oxygen to the brain.

TREATMENTS: Rehabilitative Acute Surgical Initial

Treatment Descriptions: Initial Treatment: Monitor the bodies vital functions, response to any life threatening changes Surgical Treatment: Closed brain injury, there is not much a surgeon can do. They can insert an Intracranial Pressure device to monitor the pressure to the brain. Open brain injury, repair the fracture & damaged brain tissue Acute Treatment: Minimize any secondary injury or illness/infection. Medication is given to the patient to help minimize the pain. Rehabilitative Treatment: Restore lost functions. Analyze & talk to the patient & family about what changes may need to be made. Create a therapy plan for the patient based on their needs.
