Rich Kogut October, 2002 IT Vision/Strategy Working Presentation

Topics Vision/strategy Architecture Application inventory Vendor strategy Policy needs

Inspiration Documents from IT Retreat Thoughts, desires, concerns, etc., gleaned during interview process Various discussions since 8/1 My own thoughts & experience

Most Asked Question What can it mean in concrete terms to say that we will use IT as befitting the 1 st research university to be built in the 21 st century?

Proposed Draft Vision With the aim of supporting all members of the University of California, Merced community in their efforts to realize their maximum potentials, employ the best of current and evolving technologies and practices to provide access to information and services informed by the perspective of each individual user.

Supporting Strategic Principles (1) Build service organizations geared to supporting individuals, academic groups, administrative departments, or other constituencies as the case may be, rather than on supporting specific applications and services. Deploy identity-based solutions (portals, single sign-on,...). Provide consistent, universal web-based access for general and casual use.

Supporting Strategic Principles (2) Provide high-function/high-performance access for intensive and specialized use. Deploy standards-based components for maximum flexibility and interoperability with peer institutions, and in step with Internet2- related and other advanced collaboration initiatives. Employ automated provisioning to ensure timely service and scaleable, cost-effective management.

Supporting Strategic Principles (3) Provide ubiquitous access from residence/office, campus, and wide-area locations, supporting the evolving panoply of mobile computing, telecommunications, and personal assistant devices.

IT Architecture Elements Portal Applications Network Services User Intelligence Infra. Core business systems Hardware & Mgmt. Soft. Ex. myUCMerced Ex. Email, Grades, PO Ex. Printing, file storage Ex. Directory, security Ex. SIS, FRS, HR Ex. Servers, DNS, DHCP

Application Inventory Tons of applications to deploy Some infrastructure pre-requisite to other applications (e.g., identity management) Expensive & distracting to develop some of the “user- desired” applications before deploying the core business systems they need to interface to, but some may be so useful we should do them as “throw- aways” Established vision, strategy, architecture, and oversight mechanism can help make decisions

Vendor Strategy Identify vendors of interest, especially those covering wide areas of technology and who are visionary Initial meeting with vendor and owner of functional area to exchange visions & our interest in partnership opportunities If warranted, develop preliminary agenda for formal meeting; shop it around UC Merced to find out who is interested in attending and to further develop the agenda
