Achieving your goals: Understanding what affects your weight and fitness level
2
Objectives Help students understand how science works and how our understanding is constantly advancing through scientific discovery. Students learn to understand how to reach their goals as they relate to weight and fitness. –Factors that affect weight gain/loss It is not quite as simple as: – calories in > calories out = gain weight –calories in < calories out = lose weight –calories in = calories out = maintain weight
3
Prep (pre-read) Read an article on traditional understanding of weight loss and gain. –3500 calories equals one pound.
4
Calorie Counter (Pre-lab) For three days have them keep track of all the calories they intake and have them figure out how many calories they burn each day.
5
Activity Have them discuss take home article and discuss main points. Bring in calorie counter activity and have them calculate their average daily difference between calories in and calories out. Use the traditional thought process of 3,500 calories = 1 pound to calculate how their weight should change in 6 months, and in 5 years assuming they follow the same pattern. Discuss implications of their findings and if they think that these numbers seem reasonable. Provide them with additional info about nutrition
