How does figure skating work??
Figure skaters perform leaps, spins and other graceful movements. They usually skate to music. There are competitions for either single skaters or a pair (a man and woman). The movements used in figure skating are some of the same steps that are used in ballroom dancing. Figure skating takes place at an ice rink.

Clothing and equipment
Figure skaters wear costumes that are usually very colourful and sometimes show the mood of their dance. Their skates have higher tops than speed skaters. A figure skate has two edges. Skaters skate on one edge at a time. The front of the blade has several teeth or jagged parts that grip the ice during jumps and spins.

Different events in the sport and judging
There are different sports in ice skating such as speed skating and figure skating. The pair with the highest marks wins.

Other interesting facts
People have skated on ice for at least 2000 years. The earliest skates where made of animal bones, which people strapped onto boots. Remains of ice skates dating from 50 B.C. have been found in Roman ruins in London.
