Introduction to Measurement
2
What you need to know First things first, you need to understand the basics There are two systems of measurement US/Customary (English) System which we use here Then there is the metric system which is used all over the world
3
Measurement Basics Length: a measured distance Volume/Capacity: how much something can hold (generally liquid) Weight: a measure of the heaviness of an object Mass: the amount of matter in an object
4
US/Customary System The English system has many different units of measurement Each unit has a completely different name They also have completely different conversion factors
5
Metric System The metric system has a base 10 unit and many different prefixes Do you remember any?
6
Metric Units of Measurement Meters: Measures length Liters: Measures volume or capacity Grams: measures weight/mass
7
Units of Measurement: Volume English System Cups Pints Quarts Gallons Fluid Ounces Metric System Liters
8
Units of Measurement: Length English System Inches Feet Yards Miles Metric Meters
9
Units of Measurement: Weight/Mass US System Ounce Pound Tons Metric Gram
10
Metric System Prefixes Kilo= 1000 Hecto=100 Deka= 10 METERS/LITERS/GRAMS Deci=1/10 or 0.1 Centi= 1/100 or 0.01 Mili=1/1000 or 0.001
11
US Conversions Length 1 foot = 12 inches 1 yard = 3 feet 1 mile = 5,280 feet
12
US Conversions Volume 1 cup = 8 fl oz 1 pint = 2 cups 1 quart = 2 pints 1 gallon = 4 quarts
13
US Conversions Weight 1 lb = 16 oz 1 ton = 2000 lbs

Try this easy rule: King Henry Died Bravely ( Drinking Chocolate Milk Meter, Liter or Gram )
15
K = kilo H = hecto Dk = deka B = gram or meter or liter D = deci C = centi M = milli
