© 2007 APEC Secretariat Project Management Unit (PMU) Background Since APEC began projects in 1993, projects numbers have increased from 33 per year to around 120 in 2006. Over the same period, the funds committed increased from just under $1 million to almost $8 million per year. This trend is expected to continue following recent new contributions from several member economies.

© 2007 APEC Secretariat Project Management Unit (PMU) Background Recognising the significant growth in project activity and to improve our service to members, the Secretariat has now created a specialized project management unit.

© 2007 APEC Secretariat Project Management Unit (PMU) Objectives Improve operational efficiency and effectiveness of APEC projects to ensure they meet APEC goals. Ensure continuity and passing on of institutional memory in APEC projects.

© 2007 APEC Secretariat Project Management Unit (PMU) Desired Outcomes Better coordination of project activities. More cost effective and targeted projects. Improved capacity within the Secretariat and APEC more generally in project management

© 2007 APEC Secretariat Project Management Unit (PMU) Tasks Develop/improve APEC project processes from strategic perspective. Provide guidance/advice to PDs and Project Overseers (POs) on the development, implementation and evaluation of projects. Organise/manage the Secretariat Project Assessment Panel (SPAP).

© 2007 APEC Secretariat Project Management Unit (PMU) Tasks (Continued) Provide guidance to PDs and PAs on development of contracts and approve contracts prior to signing. Develop/conduct training programmes on project management.

© 2007 APEC Secretariat Project Management Unit (PMU) Unit Composition 1 dedicated Programme Director (PD) as Coordinator (Derek Taylor, supported by Michelle Lowe) (who will have oversight of OA* and ASF* projects). 1 dedicated senior Programme Assistant (PA) (Lucy Phua). Assisted by Director/Finance (D/F) (Geoffrey Woodhead), the two (2) PDs overseeing projects under the CTI* and TILF* Fund (Hiroko Taniguchi and Takashi Hattori), Finance team (Jasmine Lee) and the BMC* PA (Belinda Chok). * OA – Operational Account, ASF – APEC Support Fund, CTI – Committee on Trade and Investment, TILF – Trade and Investment Liberalisation and Facilitation, and BMC – Budget and Management Committee.

Your Program Director will still be your first port of call in regards to projects and is able to assist you with general inquiries, and administering the project. The PMU will provide support to your Program Director Contact the PMU when: –You need more specialized guidance on the development of a project or on its implementation or its assessment and evaluations.
