3. Objective for the day  By the end of the day…  SWBAT explain and trace the possible paths of water through the water cycle.

4. The Water Cycle  What is the water cycle?  The water cycle describes the continuous movement of water above and below the surface of the Earth.

9. Evaporation  Most evaporation takes place over the ocean. Some water evaporates from lakes and rivers. Plants release water to the air through transpiration. Liquid is becoming a gas.

12.  Clouds form as the water vapor cools. Gas is becoming a liquid.

13. Precipitation  When the water droplets become heavy enough, they fall back to Earth as precipitation.

14. Runoff and Groundwater  Some water runs off along the ground surface. Some water soaks into the ground and becomes groundwater. Groundwater flows underground and eventually may flow into a body of water.

16. A constant supply?  The water cycle renews the usable supply of fresh water on Earth.  For millions of years, the total amount of water on Earth has remained fairly constant.  How so?  The amounts of evaporation and precipitation balance each other.
