2 INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WHO: Indian Nationalists; Hindu professionals and business leaders WHEN:1895 WHERE: India (a British Colony) WHAT: Indian nationalists wanted to serve in India’s government (controlled by the British), greater democracy, western-style democracy, and later to self-rule. WHY: Since the 1700s Britain had control of India; Indians had no control over their own country.

5 MUSLIM LEAGUE WHO: Indian Muslims WHERE: India (a British Colony) WHEN: 1906 WHAT: Muslims formed the organization to protect their rights; talks of setting up a Muslim state, separate from Hindus. WHY: Muslims grew distrustful of the Indian National Congress because it was mostly Hindu; grew distrustful of Hindus.

7 YOUNG TURKS WHO: Turkish nationalists WHERE: Ottoman Empire WHEN: 1890s WHAT: Supported Turkish nationalism and took control of the Turkish government in 1908; Distrustful of non-Turks and turned against Armenian Christians (Armenian Massacre followed). WHY: The group wanted to strengthen the Ottoman empire and end the threat of western imperialism.

9 PAN-SLAVISM WHO: Slavic people WHERE: Balkan peninsula (southeastern Europe) WHEN: Late 1800s – Early 1900s WHAT: A Russian sponsored nationalistic movement, based on the idea that all Slavic people share a common nationality. WHY: Russia hoped to take territory from the weakening Ottoman Empire. Nationalism would allow Russia to control Serbia.
