I Can….

Reviewing Ratios

I Can…. explain the meaning of ratios

Review the Meaning of Ratios When: The question asks me to explain the meaning. How: First, I must decide if it is a part to part, part to whole, or whole to part comparison. If it is a part to part comparison, I can read the ratio left to write. If it is a part to whole or a whole to part, I must discuss the whole before the part Example: part to part: “For every ___ _____, there are ____ ________.” Part to whole or whole to part: Out of every __________, ________ are I can check my answer by: Comparing my explanation to the question, or drawing a diagram of my explanation.

I Can…. Create and use a ratio table, by scaling a given ratio up and/or down.

Reviewing Ratio Tables When: The question asks me to create a ratio table. The question asks me to complete the given ratio table. I need a visual to solve for a missing quantity. How: Ratio tables can be created by, listing the words and quantities given in a horizontal or vertical table. I can extend a ratio table, by multiplying both quantities by the same number. I can simplify a ratio or scale a ratio down, by dividing each quantity by the same number. Sometimes, I have to scale a ratio down, before I can scale forward. I must go from the original to the new everytime. Example: I can check my answer by: Calculating the unit rate for each ratio. They will all have the same unit rate if they are equivalent.

I Can…. Create and determine equivalent ratios.

Reviewing Equivalent Ratios When: The question asks me if the ratios are equivalent. The question ask me if the ratios make a proportion. How: I can find their cross products. or I can determine their unit rates. or I can scale them up or down. Example: I can check my answer by: by trying two or more ways.

I Can…. Calculate unit rates.

Reviewing Unit Rates When: The question ask me what is the unit rate. The question asks me which is a better buy. The question asks me to how much for one or how much per something. How: I must be careful to list the quantities in the order they are asked in the question. I must include the units (labels) in the rate. I can divide the top number by the bottom number, and place the quotient over a 1 or I can scale the rate down. or I can set up a proportion and use cross multiplication and division to find equivalent cross products. Examples: I can check my answer by: cross multiplying the original ratio and the ratio I created.

I Can…. Find a missing quantity using a given ratio.

Reviewing Proportions When: The question gives 3 quantities and asks me to find the 4 th quantity. The question asks me to use a ratio to find a quantity. The question asks me to find a larger or smaller ratio. How: I can use a proportion to organize my thoughts and give me a visual. I must be careful to list the quantities in the order they are asked in the question. I can figure out how the ratio is being scaled (up or down) and by how much. or I can also use a proportion to cross multiply and divide to find equivalent cross products. Examples: I can check my answer by: cross multiplying the original ratio and the ratio I created.
