The idea behind cell phones was conceived in the late 1940s. The idea for a mobile phone was revolutionary but scientists believed it was an achievable idea. Dr. Cooper made the first call from a mobile phone in April of 1973. He made a call to his rival Joel Engel the head of research at Bell Labs.

The scientific innovations necessary for mobile phones were developed in the late 1940s and 50s. Due to highly restrictive FCC regulations, no such phones were brought to the market until 1973, but the high cost and lack of demand made it so that cellular phones were not used by significant portions of the population until the mid 1980s.

Cell phones are actually nothing but a radio, an extremely sophisticated radio. The genius of the cellular system is the division of a city into small cells. This allows extensive frequency reuse across a city, so that millions of people can use cell phones simultaneously.
