Cell “Organ”elles
3
“TYPICAL” ANIMAL CELL
4
“TYPICAL” PLANT CELL
5
CELL MEMBRANE Outer layer of animal cells Controls movement of materials into and out of cell Helps cell to maintain homeostasis (balance)
6
CELL WALL Most commonly found in plant cells and bacteria Provide Protection and Support
7
Nucleus (Brain of the cell) Directs cell activities (control center) Contains genetic material – chromosomes, DNA
8
DNA is the blueprints for the cell. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. This is what genes are made of. DNA (Owner Manual)
9
Mitochondria (Power house) Functions in energy production through chemical reactions (ATP)
10
Cytoplasm (water in a swimming pool) Gel-like mixture makes up inside of cell Holds other organelles in cell Surrounded by cell membrane
11
VACUOLES (Water Storage) For storage, digestion, and waste removal Contains water solution Help plants maintain shape (larger in plant cells)
12
CHLOROPLAST (solar panels) Usually found in plant cells Contains green chlorophyll Where photosynthesis takes place
13
Ribosome Make proteins for the cell Can be floating in cytoplasm or on Endoplasmic Reticulum
14
Process/Packages/Transports proteins made by Ribosomes and fats
15
Golgi Apparatus (Post Man) Packages and delivers protein and fats from Endoplasmic Reticulum
16
Lysosome (Trash collector) Digests and breaks down waste in the cell Similar to the stomach in the cell.
17
Centrioles Only in Animal cells Used when cells split to make new cells
