2 Bellringer: A Look at Mary Warren Handout (Act I portion) Take out your Puritan Portrait Response and Characterization sheet—we will discuss Review Rubric: CHARACTER TRADING CARD : Does the Character Trading Card include a complete description, insights, analysis of his/her development, statements and actions, and reader’s impressions of the assigned character? Puritan Portrait Response: Is the review of Puritan Portraiture complete, including a thorough description of the setting, facial expressions clothes, stance, colors and historical information?

5 Foreshadowing Plot discussion: foreshadowing. Giles Corey’s naïve questioning of the Reverend Hale regarding his wife’s “strange book” seems ominous given the context of suspicion and near hysteria. Why should we now expect that Giles’s wife will be implicated in the witch hunt in Salem?

6 Theme subjects Review the leading themes in the play as they were developed in the first act: hypocrisy, guilt, authority, and hysteria. “Around the World” butcher paper around the room with each theme labeled at the top of the page. Find examples of the theme and record them on the butcher paper (quotations with page numbers). Miller will introduce two more important themes in Act II: revenge and integrity/courage. Exit Slip : In your comp book, speculate about how these themes might be developed and to identify the characters that Miller might connect with them.
