3 A) The Land (#7 in world) Takes up 75% of South Asia. 1/3 the size of the United States. Mountains run along 3 sides of the country, and the middle of it.

4 1) Mountains Karakoram and the Himalayas form India’s northern border. Satpura range divides India into half. These mountains create two different cultures. (North and South)

6 2) Plains & Plateaus Ganges Plain has some of the most fertile soil in the country. Ganges river begins in Himalayas and flows to the Bay of Bengal. Deccan Plateau located in southern 2/3 of India. Forests, fertile farmland, and rich deposits of minerals make this plateau valuable.

8 3) Climate Most places are hot and warm most of the year. The mountains block the cold air. There is a rainy season (June-September)

9 B) The Economy GDP: 5 trillion (#3 in world) Exports: #18 in world (U.A.E.) Imports: #11 in world (China) Agriculture and Industry are equally important. Growth in 2013 fell to a decade low. This has prompted a severe depreciation in the rupee.

10 1) Agriculture Best farmland lies in the Ganges Plain and Deccan Plateau. India is the world’s second largest producer of rice. Tea, Sugarcane, Wheat, Barley, Cotton & Jute are other crops.

12 2) Industry & Mining Huge factories turn out cotton textiles and produce iron and steel. Cottage industries are source of many Indian products.

14 C) History and People About 4,000 years ago the 1 st Indian civilization existed along the Indus River. 81% of people are Hindus. Hindus worship many gods and goddesses. Buddhism started in India. 150 million people follow Islam in India.

15 Continued Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi led a nonviolent movement to free India. Received independence from United Kingdom in 1947. Before independence British gov’t divided India into two countries. (1 hindu and 1 Muslim)
