Create a Vision Chapter 6
2
How do you start your vision quest? “Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be.” »James Allen Vision quest as a search for or recognition of an aspect of your destiny –Become your own shaman –Transcend the every day perceptions and limitations
3
A Consultation with the Grim Reaper “No one on their death bed wishes they had spent more time at the office.” –What does that mean? Make the possibility of your death as a part of the equation –What would you do if you had six days to live? –How would your plans change if it were six months?
4
According to Covey According to Covey: –Attend your own funeral (fantasy, of course) –Listen to what the people are saying about you, your personality, your accomplishments –Get people from all areas of your life experiences… are they saying what you want to hear? –Can you discover through these conversations, what is important to you ?
5
Ground Hog Day Like in the movie, where the man wakes up everyday and repeats the same day, over and over again. He ultimately learns that the best he can do is to help others, and master his abilities What would you do if you were eternal? What would you focus on?
6
Six Steps for Securing your Goals Step 1: The goal must be stated in positive terms and in a way that you can achieve it yourself, regardless of the behaviors of others Step 2: Make certain you know how you will know that you have reached your goal (make them measurable) Step 3: Describe your goals as specifically as you can
7
Six Steps for Securing your Goals Step 4: Are your goals compatible with each other? (avoid conflict- conflict situations) Step 5: Assess what you already have and what you are going to need in order to reach your goals Step 6: Make a plan
8
Goal Compatibility (Step 4) In conflict situations: –Approach-Approach Conflict-both very desirable –Approach-Avoidance-job with better salary, but that you don’t like –Avoidance-Avoidance-too sick to go to the doctor to wait to receive help, but if you don’t go, can get sicker –Double Approach-Avoidance –you get your dream job, away from family
9
Self-Regulation The process of setting goals, then rewarding yourself for progress towards the goal. This can be achieved in four steps: –Establish short-term specific goals (or sub-goals) –Reward yourself with something concrete (massage, music, movie, clothes) once you attain a goal (or sub- goal) –Establish your own standards for success –Make a realistic appraisal of your abilities and adopt goals that draw from your strengths
10
Unconscious Mind Mental Imagery is the most basic way that your mind represents and stores information Imagery is the primary medium by which your unconscious mind operates Freud’s Iceberg metaphor for the mind….
12
Modeling Learn to do something by watching others do it Also known as observational learning http://video.google.co m/videoplay?docid=- 29537902760716998 77&q=bandura%27s +bobo+doll&hl=enhttp://video.google.co m/videoplay?docid=- 29537902760716998 77&q=bandura%27s +bobo+doll&hl=en
13
Process of Visualization Begin by mastering voluntary relaxation skills Garbage In Garbage Out (what you see is what you get) Visualization is much more than images Use participant and observer imagery Follow recommended sequence for the process of visualization (see page 123) Let go…..and be patient
14
Representational System Storing your memory in other sensory systems –Auditory – hearing as represented by sounds, words and language –Visual – our vision represented in mental pictures –Kinesthetic – our sense of touch represented by feelings and physical sensations –Gustatory – as tastes –Olfactory – as smells
15
Meditation People who meditate regularly report –Lower blood pressure –Reduce and lower pain –Lowers arthrosclerosis –A facilitation in general healing –Less stress –Less anxiety –Less depression –Less hostility Meditation helps you realize you are more than you think you are Meditation is a spiritual journey of discovery
16
Attitudes for Mindful Meditation Non-judging Patience Beginner’s Mind Trust Non-striving Acceptance Letting go
17
Meditation Can use technique of “Breathe in peace, let out anger (or stress)” Mantra – a sound that resonates Tai Chi – a moving meditation Qi Gong – focus on the movement of energy As you gain the ability to concentrate, you are able to stay more aware and involved in the moment, and less distracted by the meanderings of your thoughts.
18
Mindfulness Assignment (Due One Week from Today) Practicing awareness Mindfulness exercise with eating (when you have some quiet time) –Look at the food (colors, textures, aromas) –Become aware of your responses to the food –What are your thoughts like? As you go for the fork, become aware of your intentions, your fingers, arm, etc. Feel the food on your fork Notice your arm rising, your mouth opening Notice how you taste your food, how you chew it Become aware of your desire to swallow Keep chewing. Swallow Set your silverware down with full awareness of what you are doing. Are you breathing? Begin again….and ask yourself
19
Ask Yourself What did you become aware of in this process? How satisfying can a single bite of food be? Do you think you would eat more or less if you are mindful? Did the food really taste good? Did you taste something different from what you expected? How might your experience change if you were blind or had a head cold?
20
Transpersonal Psychology Psychology and spirituality Jung broke away from Freud to explore the spiritual side of humans Collective unconscious as a storehouse of experience to which all of us are connected Synchronicity as meaningful coincidences
21
Guidelines to help you when struggling Life is a Mystery – Life is Uncertain – Take an attitude of gratitude (be appreciative for what you have) Everything is connected Life is trouble Death is a great therapist Here and now is better than there and then Are you getting what you really want or what you are supposed to want?
22
Questions to ask Yourself Who Am I? What do I love to do? What is my purpose? How can I help? What is life? Have I laughed today? What is success to me? Is there another way of looking at this? Is this the day I’m going to die? Am I leading the life I want to live? Am I the person I want to be? Do I keep my word? How would the person I’d like to be do the things I’m about to do?
23
It has been said, that at the end of our lives, only two questions will concern us: Was I loved? Did I love well?
24
Mind, Body, Spirit: Seek your Balance When in doubt, do something different Get comfortable with confusion Love yourself while you discover that love is the answer Be patient and loving with yourself along your journey Trust the intuitions of your heart Have Fun!! Learn to forgive yourself, again, again, and again, and again…….
