Do Now Sit according to your learning style.

Bellringer Reflect on your individual learning style. How will you better participate / advocate for yourself in this class now that you know what your learning style is?

Unit 1: The Cognitive Approach August 26

Objective for today Learners understand and can explain the assumptions and key characteristics of the cognitive approach.

Cognition The set of mental abilities and processes related to knowledge -memory -perception - reasoning - language

The Cognitive Approach “I know for sure what we dwell on is what we become.” “I think, therefore I am” How do these quotes reflect the cognitive perspective?

Stroop Effect Test Think: What area of your cognition is being tested? https://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/java/r eady.html

Stroop Effect Test Why did you make the mistakes that you made? hint: Think about cognition.

The brain and a computer

Based on this analogy…. The cognitive approach is interested in how the brain inputs, stores, and outputs information.

LETS BRING IT BACK TO BEHAVIOR

The Cognitive Approach to Behavior Human behavior can be explained through mental processes – The way we behave is determined by the things we have LEARNED and the way we think about the world. Filling the car with gas

The Cognitive Approach MAIN ASSUMPTION: The way we THINK causes our behavior Information received from our senses is processed by the brain…..and voila! A behavior is created.

The Cognitive Approach We cannot see what a person is thinking but….. We can infer what a person is thinking based on how they act.

What might President Obama be thinking?

The Cognitive Approach WHY AM I A HORRIBLE SINGER? I never learned how to sing on-key as a child I think singing takes a lot of confidence, and I was shy, so I never tried it. I think too much and it prevents me from singing well.

Group Practice – In journals Explain the following phenomenon using the cognitive approach to behavior: Stephanie is deathly afraid of cats. She nearly faints at the sight of them, and her skin crawls when she sees a picture of a cat.

Independent Practice Explain the following phenomenon using the cognitive approach to behavior: Brandon always comes 5 minutes early to class.

BACK TO THE ANALOGY

Criticism of the Cognitive Approach It often ignores the way in which other factors, such as past experiences and culture influence how we process information. (We are not actually computers)

StrengthsWeaknesses

Strength #1 of Cognitive Psychology It uses the scientific approach through laboratory experiments High in control Establishes cause and effect

THE MORE CONTROL AN EXPERIMENT HAS…. THE MORE RELIABLE THE RESULTS ARE

Strength #2 in Cognitive Psychology Its actually useful! Many modern types of therapy are based on the cognitive approach. We can better understand behavior through the brain.

Weakness #1 in Cognitive Psychology We can only infer what people are thinking. Measures rely heavily on self-report data and observation.

Use of language through Lexigram

Many experiments are done in a lab, creating an artificial environment. Weakness #2 in Cognitive Psychology

TEST YOUR MEMORY

Directions: 1. Listen to the words as I read them aloud

WRITE DOWN AS MANY WORDS AS YOU CAN REMEMBER. YOU HAVE 60 SECONDS.

WRITE DOWN AS MANY WORDS AS YOU CAN REMEMBER. YOU HAVE 60 SECONDS.

What words did you write for list 1? For list 2?

Why do you think these particular mistakes were made?

PAMPRD P = Perception A = Attention M = Memory P = Problem Solving R = Reasoning D = Decision Making

Cognitive Psychologists Considering what you have learned so far… What might a Cognitive Psychologist do?

Cognitive Psychologist Believe that behaviour is influenced by our cognitions. The way we behave is determined by how we think. Cognitive psychologists try to understand cognitive processes and suggest theories to help explain how we process information. Cognitive psychologists are particularly interested in brain damaged patients, including those who have suffered trauma or brain tumours. They will study the impaired parts of the brain and try and link this to any changes in behaviour, personality or mental ability.

Independent Practice Outline what is meant by the cognitive approach. [2] Evaluate the cognitive approach [4]

Exit Ticket Read the following article. How does it, if at all, change your viewpoint of the online learning styles inventory you took? Psychology is always changing, as it is a relatively new field. Does this make the science less reliable to you? Why or why not?
