Humanistic Therapy Therapist acts as a facilitator to help clients better understand themselves. Person-centered Therapy Non-directive counseling – Reflects & Clarifies Based on Unconditional Positive Regard – Acceptance & Understanding Not a very scientific approach Seems more effective with highly verbal clients

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) Focused on interpersonal relationships Short (~3 months) Directive (Therapist tell the patient what to do) Effective for depression, anxiety & addiction

Group Therapy Focus on common problem of group members Alcoholism, Obesity, Etc. Contributions from group member bring insight to common problems Uses a variety of types of therapy Relative inexpensive Lacks personal attention

Family Therapy Focus is on the family unit as a system Try to get each member to change role or adopt new roles and responsibilities

Evaluating Psychotherapy: Does psychotherapy work? Yes, its better than no therapy for most people Which type of psychotherapy is best? Research does not support any particular type of psychotherapy. Therapist often use a mix of different therapies depending on the client and the problem.
