Integrated Monitoring and Control of Foodborne Viruses in European Food Supply Chains
2
Workpackage 1 Project administration CAT has met 12 times, and reported to Commission. No significant problems have been encountered. Overseeing project progress Mid-Term Review was successful. An extension of 6 months has been requested (reviewers supported this), from April 1 st to September 30 th 2011. A revised Description of Work has been prepared to incorporate this extension. 7 RDMBs held on schedule. Well attended by project partners. Netviewer helps to keep meetings focussed 2 PABs held at Consortium Meetings.

WP2 -4 The Ring Trials were all completed on time. The soft fruit method proved robust, but the pork product method showed inconsistencies. A webconference was held in which the method was revised and the relevant SOP updated. A lot of time has been spent on method development. We need to start using the methods, even if they are not perfect.

WP 2 -4 The Data-Gathering Tasks Data-gathering has started in all supply chains and phases. No sample has as yet been analysed to completion, but remain at various stages of preparation in freezers.
5
WP5 All partners trained in use of the calculation software tool for data analysis. A sampling strategy prepared in cooperation with WP6 which details procedure to be followed by the data- gathering labs to identify the points where samples should be taken.
6
WP6 Fact-finding missions have commenced, and a series of reports from them is being produced. The VITAL sampling strategy was produced in cooperation with WP5. Some initial difficulties with access to premises were however resolved. Communication with the Codex Alimentarius Working Group on Viruses has been established. Revision of Task 6.3
7
WP6 Fact-finding missions must be completed in 2010. Survival and elimination studies – harmonisation. Vaccination study.

WP7 Task 7.1 is now Verification of the Codex Alimentarius Guidelines on the Application of General Principles of Food Hygiene to the Control of Viruses in Food. It requires close liaison with the Expert Stakeholders. The requested extension to the project will allow the final Symposium, Workshop and Training Courses to be held in June 2011.

Integration We must bring together all the various strands of the project – data, risk analyses, HACCP etc into a tangible approach to monitoring and control. This will require very close cooperation and communication between all project partners.
