As a young man I built, repaired, and raced bicycles, but I abandoned my bicycle business almost as soon as I saw my first automobile. I worked at European auto factories, then came to Canada, In 1901 I moved to Brooklyn. Soon i was hired as driver for the Fiat race team, I left Fiat to work for William C. Durant at General Motors, where I became the lead driver for the Buick race team. Often a winner but almost as often seriously injured, I invented the roll bar, a steel hoop installed above the driver's head and across the vehicle to prevent the driver's body from being tossed and crushed if the car rolls over.William C.
