4 48% of the total energy consumption in the US comes from BUILDINGS

5 Buildings are hidden polluters

6  40% of the carbon dioxide (out of the 48%) that buildings emit is actually in the BUILDING OPERATIONS Heating Lighting Cooling Hot water

7  The other 8% of carbon dioxide (out of the 48%) emissions comes from PRODUCING MATERIALS FOR THE BUILDINGS and the CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

8 Design of the building  Buildings last for a long time (~50-100 years)  We have to be conscious about how we DESIGN buildings Materials Lighting Heating/cooling Power sources

9 Sustainable Buildings  The solution is to build sustainable buildings -- structures that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient through a building’s life
