1. What is the definition of geography? 2. Who studies geography and what is their job? 3. What do the 5 themes of geography help you do? 4. What are the 5 themes of geography? 1. The study of the earth 2. Geographers study the earth. They try to answer two basic questions: Where are things located? and Why are they here? 3. The 5 themes help organize information about the Earth and its people 4. Human Environment Interaction, Movement, Location, Place, Regions (see your cheat sheet for examples of each theme!)

Assignment: Due tomorrow! Pick a LOCATION that you have been before! It can be anywhere but needs to be specific. For example, Jacksonville, NC; San Fransisco California; London, England. Don’t just say – Grandma’s house. On a sheet of white computer paper (I will suppy you with this) you will need to describe the location by using the 5 themes of geography. Illustrate at least two of the themes. Can be printed off the internet.

Topsail Island, NC Location: Located in between Jacksonville and Wilmington North Carolina. Could include Latitute/Longitude Could use your cardinal directions Place: Coastal Community. Not many people live there full time (big vacation spot!). Hot summers and cool winters. The ocean is a supplier of jobs Could describe climate Could describe landforms How many people live there? What kinds of jobs? Region: Coastal Region of NC. Might need to research this theme! Something that this area or the people have in common! HEI: Humans fish the ocean for food and jobs. Humans pollute the beach areas which can injure fish/wildlife. Beach provides a vacation spot and brings in a lot of money for the area. Movement: Highways and major roadways are a part of the town. Shipping is a major industry – lots of places for boats to dock. Large seafood distributors take seafood from ocean move it to other places. Newspapers, e-mails and other bulletins get the ideas around.
