3 WHAT DOES A MENTOR DO?  The following are among the mentor’s functions:  Teaches the mentee about a specific issue  Coaches the mentee on a particular skill  Facilitates the mentee’s growth by sharing resources and networks  Challenges the mentee to move beyond his or her comfort zone  Creates a safe learning environment for taking risks  Focuses on the mentee’s total development

4 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTEE? Mentees gain invaluable insight beyond their own education and experience. Mentoring programs are designed primarily for the benefit of mentees. Ideally, these relationships with begin with specific goals and expectations, which are typically met by a well designed program.

5 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTEE? Benefits of being a mentee may include:  Access to a support system during critical stages of academic and personal development  An insider's perspective on navigating “the high school years”  Clearer understanding and enhancement academic plans  Exposure to diverse perspectives and experiences  Direct access to powerful resources within the school and community  Identification of skill gaps (academic, social)  Greater knowledge of academic and social success factors  The foundation of a lasting network within the school community

6 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTOR? Mentors are rewarded by sharing knowledge and skills, helping others succeed, and supporting their school community. Mentoring requires a willingness to share, listen, and provide advice in a flexible relationship shaped by the needs of the mentee. While mentoring programs are designed primarily for the benefit of mentees, mentors enjoy rewards as well.

7 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MENTOR? Benefits of being a mentor include:  Exposure to the “next generation”  Ongoing attention to your own skill development  The satisfaction of imparting wisdom and experience to others without a huge time commitment  Enhancement of coaching and skills  Exposure to diverse thoughts, styles, personalities, and cultures  A way to give back to your school community  A lasting network and legacy at Trinity

8 WHAT DOES AN IDEAL MENTOR LOOK LIKE?  Outside of mentee’s hierarchy  Accomplished role model  Eager to help develop others  Effective listening, feedback, and coaching skills  Able to make time commitment  Able to maintain confidentiality
