Research 2007-8 Student attitudes to choosing Latin at GCSE

The survey findings today based on 320 returns from 6 schools – 3 mixed comprehensive – 1 girls’ comprehensive – 1 girls’ independent – 1 boys’ grammar 48.4% male, 51.6% female 29.4% continuing with Latin, 60.6% not continuing

Career Choices Do boys or girls have more definite ideas? Are they choosing the same careers? How useful is Latin to those choices? Asked to answer Yes or No as to whether already had some thoughts about a future career

Career Choices – Girls Trends Medical (including vet) almost equal numbers of continuers and non-continuers – very popular Teaching – low votes from both! Less than 12 altogether Law – more continuers(13) than non(6) Other – photo and design, journalism, politician, animal work, architect, working with languages, food technology

Career Choices – Boys Trends Medical – (10 more boys than girls) Teaching - only 2 interested! Law – more non-continuers (13) than continuers (7) Other – anything from a golf-pro to an astronaut, a pilot, an accountant, journalist, actor, archaeologist, architect, business man, engineer, computer wizard, foreign diplomat or policeman!
