The First Triumvirate -Civil Wars broke out (82-31BC) -3 men competed for power: Crassus, Pompey, & Julius Caesar (rich & powerful) -They form the 1 st Triumvirate -Triumvirate- governed by 3 people with equal power -Crassus killed in battle (53BC) -People fear Caesar’s popularity & vote Pompey to rule (ask Caesar to step down) -Caesar battles Pompey & wins; controls all Rome -Dictator (absolute ruler) -Gives land to poor, senator go from 300 to 900 - Caesar assassinated (senators)

The Second Triumvirate -Power struggle after Caesar’s death leaves Octavian, Antony, & Lepidus -Octavian takes West; Antony takes East (leaves to conflict) -Antony teams with Cleopatra -Battle of Actium-Octavian’s navy & army are victorious -Cleopatra & Antony flee to Egypt, but kill themselves -Octavian ruled over Roman world (31BC-AD14) called the Age of Augustus -Republic ends -Title of Augustus means “revered one”; rule military -Appoints governors to provinces

Age of Augustus -Octavian tried to take over Germany, but defeated -Dies in AD14 but passes throne through family -Emperors eventually become too corrupt -Nero killed own mother -Civil war broke out (AD69) -Shortly after, succession of 5 good emperors (known for tolerance & giving) -Marcus Aurelius -Pax Romana- peaceful & prosperous time -Praised for building, bridges, & roads -Empire expands; hard to defend

Art, Architecture, & Literature -Realistic portraits & landscapes -Arch, vault, & dome -1 st to use large scale concrete -Great builders (roads, bridges, aqueducts) -Virgil wrote epic poem Aeneid Daily Life -Praise children; educate all -Boys are taught to read, write, moral principles, family values, law & military training -Adult at 16 (purple to white) -Girls married from 12-14

Slave Revolt -Most Romans had 1-2 slaves -Slaves worked on farms or doing housework -Extremely bad conditions -After wars, more people were captured; needed because empire is expanding -Most famous slave revolt in 73BC led by gladiator Spartacus -Led 70,000 slaves against armies -Hung to death on cross along with 6,000 followers
