3 Life Before PBIS…  Chlorine Bombs  Bomb Threats  Multiple Evacuations  4000+ referrals/year  56 Expulsions/year  45% Expulsions were ninth grade

4 Buy-In is Critical! ATTEMPT #1  Principal Says “we will do this”.  Staff Says “Hmmm, don’t think so”. ATTEMPT #2  Teacher presents information about PBIS and explains the benefits  Staff asked to experiment 1 st semester and give feedback  Whole school kick-off second semester

5 Not Just “One More Thing” To Do  Building on what you already have in place –Work smarter not harder (condense committees) –Look at your initiatives and consolidate where appropriate –Brings a unifying focus to individual efforts

8 How Are We After Year Six?  We were told that the greatest challenge is with high schools.  We are focusing on our faculty as well as our students.  We are continuing to get faculty members to buy-in to the PBIS approach.  Our focus/theme is FAMILY, COMMITMENT and RENEWAL.

11 It Takes a Team Approach  Team members from each department  Getting the Community Involved –North County Business Advisory Board Partnership –Fundraising –Incentives –Adding students and parents to the team

12 Address the Data: Implications and Improvements  Are we happy with the data?  Top 3  Comparison over the years  Share Data with the Faculty  How can we improve…. Teamwork makes the dream work!

13 Look Beyond the Data…  Don’t just focus on the numbers.  Spend time re-building morale and relationships among your staff.  Better staff climate will translate into better student climate.  Look at the culture of your school.  Be willing to have those “courageous conversations”.
