3 Keyword Research The purpose of keyword research is NOT to ind the most high-traffic phrases you can think up. The purpose of keyword research is to find the phrases that will make you money. You need to consider how long you can survive without ROI to help determine your target order. You need to think about how much effort you're REALLY willing to put into a project. Let's consider a downhill mountain biking site (my personal hobby).

4 Downhill Mountain Biking The first thing to do is to think about the generic phrases you're going to want and then drill down from there. I'd begin with “mountain bike” and check the search volumes. I'd then search various parts, components, models and brands to determine their search volume levels. At the end of the day I'd gather together a list of about 15 generic phrases and about 50 to 60 less competitive phrases and start heading into the competition analysis side of things.
