1
Classifying Chemical Reactions
2
What is a chemical reaction? A chemical reaction is the change of a substance into a new one that has a different chemical identity. Molecules or atoms are rearranged.
3
Signs of a Chemical Reaction Proof: one or more substances has changed identity – chemical change 1.Evolution of energy as heat and/or light 2.Production of a gas 3.Formation of a precipitate 4.Color change
4
Synthesis Reactions Two or more substances combine to make one product A + B AB 2Na + Cl 2 2NaCl
5
Decomposition Reactions One reactant breaks down into two or more substances AB A + B Usually require heat, electricity, or light H 2 O H 2 + O 2
6
Single Replacement Reactions One element replaces another element in a compound A + BC AC + B Cu + 2AgNO 3 Cu(NO 3 ) 2 + 2Ag
7
Double Displacement Reactions AX + BY BX + AY Two compounds switch ions Usually form a precipitate – a solid Pb(NO 3 ) 2 (aq) + KI (aq) PbI 2 (s) + KNO 3 (aq)
8
Combustion Reactions Burning something Combining it with oxygen C x H y + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O CH 4 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O
9
Classify the type: PbCl 2 + AgNO 3 Pb(NO 3 ) 2 + AgCl ___________________________ NH 3 + HCl NH 4 Cl ___________________________ Al 2 S 3 Al + S ___________________________ H 2 SO 4 + Fe H 2 + FeSO 4 ___________________________ C 12 H 22 O 11 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O
10
Create your own chemical reaction cartoon
12
Requirements: Must include: Synthesis, Decomposition, Single Replacement, and Double Replacement Cartoon. All four should be placed on the front of a sheet of white paper provided. Each reaction must be labeled. Must be colorful and neat! Each student is required to turn in their own assignment!
