TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS
2
SYNTHESIS REACTIONS Occur when two or more substances combine to form a new compound. Also know as composition reactions. A + X → AX Examples: 2Ca + O 2 → 2CaO 2Fe + 3Cl 2 → 2FeCl 3
3
DECOMPOSITION REACTIONS Occur when a single compound undergoes a reaction that produces two or more simpler substances. AX → A + X Examples: H 2 CO 3 → CO 2 + H 2 O 2KClO 3 → 2KCl + 3O 2
4
SINGLE-DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS Occur when one element replaces a similar element in a compound. Also known as single-replacement reactions. A + BX → AX + B Examples: 2Na + FeCl 2 → 2NaCl + Fe 2Na + 2HOH → 2NaOH + H 2
5
DOUBLE-DISPLACEMENT REACTIONS Occur when ions from two compounds exchange places to form two new compounds. AX + BY → AY + BX Examples: 2KI + Pb(NO 3 ) 2 → KNO 3 + PbI 2 Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 + 3Ca(OH) 2 → 2Al(OH) 3 + 3CaSO 4
6
COMBUSTION REACTIONS Occur when a substance combines with oxygen gas and releases a large amount of energy (in the form of heat and light). O 2 (g) MUST be a reactant. Examples: C 3 H 8 + O 2 → 3CO 2 + 4H 2 O 2H 2 S + O 2 → 2SO 2 + 2H 2 O
