Biomimicry Lesson one: Lessons from nature Learning objectives To investigate linear and closed-loop systems

Discussion What are your thoughts on plastic bags with regard to: Usefulness Pollution Materials used Recycling Why don’t we design all plastic bags like the degradable one?

Activity GROUP 1 Arrange the cards you’ve been given to represent the lifecycle of a plastic bottle. Start with the oil rig at one end of the paper and as the line progresses think about: Different stages of production (refining, making the polymer, manufacturing the bottle) Distribution Use Disposal GROUP 2 Arrange the cards based on your knowledge of food chains from your biology lessons. After 10 minutes, each group should present their findings to the other group on the table.

Discussion: Linear economy What do we mean by technical nutrient?

Discussion: Circular economy What do we mean by the following terms? Biological nutrient Circular economy Cradle to cradle (C2C)

Lessons from nature Present your work on A3 paper. Collect a range of images that show natural objects which could inspire the design of a lamp. These might include: Insects Plant forms Habitats Skeletal structures
