Impact of WWI During the time of World War I and after, aka the “Over There Decade,” pop culture emerged in the US. Between 1916-1921 may African Americans migrated to the cities – African American pop. In NYC increased 100%

1919 Race riots across the country. Beginning of the first ‘Red Scare.’ – Due to Communist take-over in Russia. – IWW.

New Fads Ouija Board became a national sensation. New toys – Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, & Erector Sets Movies. theater and radio

Flappers Enduring image of women of the 20s Rebels; offended their mothers Identified by their short hair and skirts, turned-down hose, & powered knees

More on Flappers… Slang used to describe them: broad, bunny, dame, cat’s meow… Represented a generation that was determined to never be bored. Women became more independent – drank hard alcohol and smoked in public

1920s Fashion Women wore shorter skirts out of convenience. Women threw away their corsets and petticoats.

Women in the Workforce About 15% of working women became professionals; 20% of women held clerical jobs. Women became doctors, lawyers, social workers, bankers, and police and probation officers (in small #s).

Women’s Suffrage Woodrow announced his support for suffrage in 1918. Anthony Amendment – Passed 1/10/1918 – Barely had 2/3 majority 19 th Amendment added to the Constitution – August 26, 1920
