The Islands of Japan How did the geography of Japan influence its development? The four main islands: –Hokkaido –Honshu –Shikoku –Kyushu. many smaller islands. Formed by volcanoes millions of years ago. 1,500 earthquakes a year. Typhoons (Pacific Ocean Hurricanes) common Only 20% of land suitable for farming. –mostly along the sea coast Biggest resource is the sea. sea provided food, protection, and allowed for Japan’s culture to develop in isolation. Ainu –t–theory: origins were Siberia, Russia –s–spoke language unlike any in East Asia –l–looked different (taller) than others in Japan –f–fought for land but lost –r–retreated to Hokkaido –g–gradually adopted culture of others Japanese on southern islands –r–ruled by clans (extended families) –c–clan ruled by chiefs ( also religious leader) descended from nature spirits (kami) –r–rituals became the Shinto religion Largest clan on Honshu in Yamato region –b–believed descended from Sun goddess –c–conquered others through military might –l–leaders declared “emperors” of all Japan sea provided food, protection, and allowed for Japan’s culture to develop in isolation.
