Head Restraint for Race Car Drivers Aim Jirut and Asif Lala Advised by: Drs. Paul King and Jackson Roberts
2
Background Fatal neurological damage to the brain ensues after many high speed frontal race car collisions. Current restraint systems are insufficient for preventing such injuries. – Air bags – 5-Point Harnesses – Helmets
3
Project Definition Design, test, and build a prototype for a head restraint system for race cars during racing conditions.
4
Objectives Provide an Easy Escape Mechanism Allow for Sufficient Visual Range of Motion Provide Sufficient Protection at Maximum Speeds. Be Constructed of Lightweight Materials Be Compatible at Amateur and Professional Race Car Seat Dimensions
5
Product Clientele Formula One-type Race Car Driver Product Prototype Built for Vanderbilt University’s SAE Formula Race Car Team
6
Past Work Best project models for the head restraint system were researched and chosen. – Crushable Steering Column – Air Bag – Reverse Shock Absorbing Helmet – Bungee Cord
7
Current Work Roll Bar Seat Frame
8
Future Work (thru Feb.) Finalize system ideas and draft the design using AutoCAD. Run computer simulation on the final system. Finish research on the stresses and strains of the human body. – Brain impact tolerance – Head and neck tolerance
