Altruistic: Nuns and nurses are usually very altruistic people since they seek ways to help people. Ambivalent: I am ambivalent about a permanent relationship with him; I like him one day and don’t the next. Angular: The patient has lost so much weight that his face has become angular.

Arrogant: Because the girl was so arrogant, she had few friends. Aversion: I have an aversion to getting married. Discern: Because of the fog, I was barely able to discern the landing strip. Disdain: Never having had to do manual labor, he distained the idea of tending a garden.

Disparage: His disparaging remarks about me caused the committee to give the job to another person. Disparity: The couple got married even though there was a great disparity in their ages. Embellish: He would embellish his narratives with anecdotes about famous people.

Engender: His angry words engendered strife in his relationship with his wife. Innocuous: Since the food seems innocuous, I believe it is safe for us to have some. Insipid: I am bored by your insipid essays. Lament: She lamented the death of her father. Laud: Her essay was lauded by all teachers.

Obscure: Because the meaning of the play was so obscure, I was unable to enjoy it. Ostentatious: That ring is too ostentatious to be worn in public. Prodigal: The prodigal son squandered his inheritance. Repudiate: He announced he would repudiate all debt.

Reticence: A lawyer must have great reticence in discussing matters that could violate his client’s rights. Revere: Nearly all Catholics revere the Pope. Serene: The mountain on a clear spring morning is a serene setting. Subtle: He was very subtle as he slipped the waiter a large tip.

Superfluous: The extra long essay seemed superfluous. Taciturn: A shy person is usually taciturn.
